New 2020 Jeep Gladiator Mojave Special Edition

It took a long time, a lot of rumours and a lot of anticipation, but last year Jeep finally came up with goods and brought us the Gladiator, a pickup truck version of its imperious Wrangler Unlimited. A lot of buyers will have been more than happy with it in its off-road focused Rubicon trim, but Jeep isn't resting on its laurels, and now we have the Jeep Gladiator Mojave.

The 2020 Jeep Gladiator Mojave is a Special Edition of the Jeep truck which is aimed at a quite specific niche but is likely to find favour with a lot of buyers who will never go near the kind of environments this Special Edition is designed to conquer.

Desert Rated

You've heard of "Trail Rated" Jeep models, right? Well, this new model is Jeep Desert Rated. Desert rated is a new designation that, according to Jeep, unsurprisingly means a specific model is designed to represent the "ultimate in high-speed off-road capability and performance in grueling desert and sand environments."

This 2020 Gladiator Mojave is the first Jeep model to earn this soon to become highly sought-after new badge, and it probably won't be too long until other Jeep models become "Desert Rated."

What does Desert Rated mean then?

Some people think off-road just means anywhere there isn't a road, but there are many different surfaces and environments a vehicle can be asked to navigate in the world of off-road adventuring, and some of them require very specialized equipment and techniques.

To suit a sandy desert environment the Gladiator Mojave Special Edition comes equipped with industry-exclusive FOX® hydraulic jounce bumpers and 2.5-inch internal bypass shocks with external reservoirs. This version of the Gladiator isn't just designed to cope with the desert then; it's also designed to navigate the sandy pains at some speed.

Other special features of this Special Edition model include a reinforced frame, a one-inch front suspension lift, a silver front skid plate, stronger axles than a regular Gladiator with cast-iron steering knuckles, some aggressively styled front seats with integrated upper bolsters, and a standard set of 33-inch Falken WildPeak all-terrain tires.

It's still a Gladiator

Under the hood is the tried-and-tested 3.6L Pentastarâ„¢ powerplant that puts out a healthy 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque, which also comes standard with the stop/start feature to reduce fuel consumption and reduce emissions. It comes mated to a six-speed manual transmission, although many buyers are likely to take up the optional of the available eight-speed automatic instead.

Interior

As you'd want and expect, the Mojave Edition looks the part both inside and out. On the inside, there are those more aggressive front seats than the rest of the range, which have integrated upper bolsters to hold occupants safely and comfortably in place when negotiating the challenging desert environment at speed. These upgraded seats can be specified in leather or cloth with orange accent stitching, and naturally, they're also beautifully marked as special with embroidered Mojave logos.

The interior comes in two different colour options of Black and Steel Gray, and there's also a competition-inspired steering wheel that's leather-covered and has accent stitching that features an aggressive rim section for additional grip and superior ergonomic comfort.
