Discover the All-New 2020 Jeep Wrangler EcoDiesel

The Jeep Wrangler is one of the most iconic vehicle designs, but the problem with such iconic status is that it's hard for Jeep to update the Wrangler SUV without straying from what's undeniably a winning formula. The 2020 Wrangler was already an even more user-friendly version of this legendary 4x4 for those who rarely stray from the road than its predecessors, but it's now been made even better with the introduction of a long-awaited EcoDiesel engine option.

Why choose a Diesel Wrangler?

It's a little ironic that after years and years of European automakers trying to convince North America that diesel was the best fuel to power autos, we now find Europe railing against diesel while North America is now starting to embrace it. The difference between the way North America is now seeing diesel as a viable option for autos and the way European automakers were pushing it in the past, is that Europeans were using it for all vehicles. Over here though, diesel is becoming a popular option for very specific types of vehicles; namely, pickup trucks and SUVs.

There are a few reasons why a diesel-powered Wrangler makes a lot of sense. First, diesel engines produce a lot of torque which is perfect for towing or demanding off-road driving. Then there's the fuel efficiency a diesel offers, which is considerably better than a gas engine of equivalent or even lesser power. And finally, diesel engines are incredibly durable, so there's every chance a 2020 Jeep Wrangler EcoDiesel will be going strong long for much longer than most buyers are ever likely to demand from these incredible Jeep SUVs.

Engine details

The diesel engine in the new 2020 Jeep Wrangler EcoDiesel is a 3.0-litre V-6 turbodiesel that develops 260 horsepower and a massive 442 lb.-ft. of torque. Although Europeans have had diesel Wranglers for many years, this will be the first time the Wrangler has been offered with a diesel engine in North America, and it's in response to overwhelming demand from consumers.

All that torque makes a great Wrangler drive both on and off-road in terms of performance, and it also makes this the most fuel-efficient Wrangler to-date. Although the 2020 model already delivered an engine revolution with the option of a mild-hybrid, the eTorque option for the Wrangler is only available for top-spec Sahara models. On the other hand, if you fancy a Wrangler with a diesel powerplant, you can specify the EcoDiesel in any four-door Unlimited version of the 2020 Wrangler.

Drivetrain

Of course, whichever trim level of Wrangler EcoDiesel you go for, you'll always be getting a proper 4x4. Jeep hasn't gone down the route of offering a two-wheel-drive version of the Wrangler, which for Wrangler enthusiasts would be pretty unthinkable. However, to get the most out of this new engine, Jeep has paired it with a new TorqueFlite 8HP75 eight-speed automatic transmission. This gearbox has been specifically calibrated for low RPM shifts and to handle the on- and off-road rigors a Jeep Wrangler has to contend with. More than 40 individual shift maps have been incorporated to optimize shift points for enhanced fuel economy, performance, and incredible 4x4 capability.
